Starting A Productive Work Day
August 23, 2010 by: thedailyactionenforcerEmphasis on multi-tasking and a super-natural ability to be productive are all assets in an ever quickening working world. You may be feeling the pressure as well. You probably have a hard time getting to sleep because you’re thinking about all the things you have to get done tomorrow, all the things you didn’t finish today. When you do wake up, you’re probably in a rush to start working that you skip a few essential steps that will actually help your productivity. Stop the overwhelming rush, get your priorities straight and get in control!
Here’s what you have to do first: rest. Being well-rested when you wake up will help your productivity. If your alarm clock rings only a few hours after you’ve fallen asleep, you’re probably going to dread waking up. However, if you’ve fallen asleep early, getting 8 hours of sleep, you’ll wake up energized and refreshed.
Getting enough rest may take some discipline on your part. You have to avoid the urge to keep working, when you know you’d be better off resting. If you do decide you’re going to work through the night, you should be warned that you’re not working to your full capacity while sleep deprived.
When you do wake up, make sure you spend some time doing something that requires discipline. This may include jogging, or it may mean jumping on your mongoose mountain bike for a ride. You may not love it, but accomplishing something in the morning will help you feel like you can accomplish anything for the rest of your day. It’s a great motivator.
Once your back from riding one of the several diamondback bikes you own, eat a healthy breakfast. You may be tempted to skip breakfast, but you’ll be doing yourself more harm than good. Imagine sitting at your desk trying to get work done with the sound of your stomach pounding in your ears, what a distraction!
Spend time creating a list of exactly what needs to be done. You can do this before you start your work, or have it prepared from the night before. Find out which method works best for you. Reevaluate your task list. What definitely has to get done today, an article, a web design revision, the urge to satisfy a tattoo fever?
After you’ve gone through the pre-work preparation steps, its now time to focus. Do you have to get dressed, even if you’re working from home, to make you feel professional? Do you have to go into your home office to get into your work mentality? Whatever it may be, when you sit down to work, avoid distractions and focus on what you have to get done.
